Reginald often wished he’d chosen to run away after his parents died, go farther north, and try to live as a free man. But after having met Charlotte one summer day, he knew in an instant he was bound to this place as long as Charlotte was here. She made a habit of visiting the fields, not minding in the least about getting dirty or dusty. It became a game to her, a challenge to avoid detection by Julius and his men. She’d sneak over a few times a week at night with others in her father’s employ, teaching the slaves to read and write, along with basic math skills.

Charlotte was well-liked and respected. And Reginald grew to love her, never thinking he’d ever have a chance to share his feelings with her. Until earlier this summer, when Charlotte had confessed her love for him. He thought a person would be hard-pressed to find another who was happier than him at that moment. Since then, they found ways to be together, just the two of them, as often as possible. During a walk when they’d snuck off, they’d discovered a small cave deep in the forest that bordered both properties. It became their secret meeting spot.
